Default Mics-what do you use live?

Hey guys,
Was curious as to what you use to mic your amp when playing live? I have heard great things about the Sennheiser E906 being easier to use and sounding better than the sm57....that would be a plus for me due to a short soundcheck and finding a sweetspot quickly. Any thoughts, finds or tips as to what you have used?

I compared the SM57 with the e606 (should be the same as the e906 without on/off switch) and like the e606 more. it has a warmer sound to me.

I use a Sennheiser E906 (which doesn't have an on/off switch like mentioned about, but a low- and high roll-off filter which I never use).

Ideal for gigs: great sound without the hassle or need for a mic-stand that can be accidentally moved or tipped over. Just hang the mic over the speaker and you're good to go.

SM57s and 58s here. Reliable, sturdy, they sound good, used by everyone for decades. But the main factor for me: I already have them, so why buy new mics?

I currently use an E906 and occasionally a SM57. The key for me is taking the time to find the sweet spot and mark it with tape so every gig I know right where to place the mic. This way if you are in a hurry you don't have to dick around trying to make it sound good. I originally had my rig at home and experimented with mic placement through my IEM's. This got me very close and only needed a slight tweak the first time out. I have my E906 on a homemade Zbar http://www.performanceaudio.com/cgi/...oducts_id=5469
The nice thing about the E906 is it is easy to adjust for tone. If my amp is a little bright out front I just slightly turn it or slide it over to get rid of that. I have my E906 set to the Flat setting and couldn't be happier with a guitar amp mic. In reality I think you can get similar sounds out of a 57 and the 906 just by mic placement but the 906 is just a little easier to get "right"

Doesn't the tape rattle/change tone somehow? I think I read that once..

I bought an Audix D2 for miking my steel pan, because I love my Audix vocal mics (OM7 for my quiet voice and mic-eating tendencies, OM6 for my wife's trained soprano voice). The first time a sound guy used the D2 on my guitar amp he said he was going to go out the next day and buy a couple. Sounded great. I'm pretty sure all Audix stuff sounds great (their drum mics are considered industry standard).

Not that I'm aware of. I don't really see how it could. For my E906 I made a "L" shape with the tape and the mic fits inside the L.

NONE !

I feed a direct XLR cable to the board.

If I have to use one... an SM57 is the first thing I'll ask for... becaus eit's widely available and I have one with me in case a backup is needed(also carry an SM58)

I have a Blue Microphone (The Ball) that I haven't used in any live context on an amp... but would give it a shot. A fun mic... but even more usefull than it is fun Requires phantom power tho... usually not a problem these days.
