I use a DR-07.
Easy, sounds good, takes any kind of SD card, no bullshit software for uploading to any computer. Frankly, they're all about the same. I picked the Tascam mainly because it works (visually) just like their tape recorders and it was offered at a good price at the time.

H2 and H4 both have the same onboard mics. Only H2 has 4 of them

Live recording in MP3 is what this does best and the playback sounds just like it did in the room.
+1

The H2 claims to record in surround sound but I have not tried that out.
Yes, H2 can record all 4 mics into 2x stereo tracks. You have 3 options: front mics (90degrees), rear (120 degrees) and all 4.

I'm planning to pick up an H2 or H4n. I don't know if I'd use all of the effects and four track stuff on the H4n. Mostly looking to record bad rehearsals, capture song ideas on my acoustic, and record gigs. The H4n's ability to use external mics is a plus though.

I borrowed a friends Tascam DR-1 to record our last rehearsal. The sound wasn't too bad, certainly not as good as what John got from the H2. The main problem was that we rehearse on a stage and to have quick access to start and stop the recorder, we put it in the center of the band. Drums, bass and Trumpet/Flugel horn are behind me facing forward, and my guitar amp and vocal monitor are to the front facing backwards. The Tascam picked up the drums, bass and horn well but my guitar and vocals are low in the mix and sound like they weren't hitting the mics and directly as the other instruments.

I'm sure with some experimentation we could get it better. But, it made me think that the H2 might work better for recording in that environment because of having the four mics and being able to record from both sides of the unit. Obviosly for recording shows, the recorder could be out front and the sound would be coming from one direction, so it wouldn't be an issue.

Any thoughts from those that have actually used the H2 and H4n to record in this type of situation would be helpful.
