But others believe such unquestioning devotion to the tones and gear of yesteryear is backward, ignorant, and dangerously close-minded. Maybe even dangerous enough to threaten the instrument’s relevance and longevity.
I've heard similar things about how conservative guitar player are and how their devotion to past tones may make them irrelevent. But, what other instrument has radically changed in tone? Sure there are some new keyboard sounds, but you still mostly hear the same basic sounds (piano, wurlitzer, B3, synth, strings, Clav, mellotron, etc.). Are the sounds of bass, drums, trumpets, saxaphones, violins, etc. evolving to stay relevent?

I suppose there have been experiments with electronic drum sounds, but we still mostly hear the basic acoustic set. Most drummers I know that play electronic drums are trying to get the most realistic acoustic drum sounds out of them that they can.

What about the cowbell? It hasn't changed and still brings on that same ol' fever!

!
To a certain extent, yes! Compare Lester Young, Coltrane, Mike Brecker and Chris Potter; there is a certain evolution, as is in guitar. Radiohead use pretty oldskool gear, as does Josh Homme, but is doesn't exactly sound like the Yardbirds now does it?

Ima read the article as soon as I get home!
