Just came back from my son Simon( AKA Aleister Page)'s first solo gig...
Well of course he ROCKED IT! hahahaha...
It was the high school talent show...he was supposed to do it with his new band he was (finally) getting together, but the day of the audition the bass player stabbed a kid( with a pencil) in school...so that was out!
( he's got some issues I guess...weird huh? a bass player with "issues"?)
...so instead of giving up he came home grabbed his accoustic and went in solo...got the opening spot!
I'll post video if I can later...
Set list:
Whiskey in a Jar
Pinball Wizard ( with see me feel me, and right behind you bits to start)
Bron Yr Aur Stomp
( guy came up to me half way though BYAS and said " Your boy? nice choice of tunes!)
he was going to do "Hey Hey What Can I Do ", too bit ran outta time...
It was pretty cool...thanks for being there guys!

THe new Cult album gets released next Tuesday May 22. There is a good article with Billy Duffy about his guitars in the new Premier Guitar magazine. Here is a link to the article

And I finally found out about his telecaster. Its a Nash 63 Relic Esquire with a Seymour Duncan in the bridge with push pull for humbucker and single coil tones. I've always been curious about that guitar but it does sound great. Here is a video with it and a great song.

1968 Fender Princeton Reverb, known as a 'drip edge' because of the aluminum trim around the edge of the grillcloth and this was a feature on the transition silverface from blackface amps in 1968-69 heading into the silverface era of the 70's. These Fender drip edge amps of all sizes are known as being the savvy buyers best buy as they cost a good deal less less than, in this instance, a blackface Princeton Reverb which goes for $2000-2500 in excellent original condition but has a 100% blackface circuit down to the blackface 5AR4 Rectifier. I got the amp with a little players mojo, for around a grand.
What a beautiful sounding amp, Fender really got this one right so many years ago. The only modification is a newer Jensen C10Q speaker which I might want to experiment with a Emi Ragin' Cajun or a Weber or suggestions? The Jensen sounds good if bright, it's the speaker Fender puts in the reissues. The original Oxfords are known as being rather anemic. A blackface Princeton Reverb which is essentially what this is...it just don't get much better IMHO.

Also picked up a pre Fender buy out, out of production SWR Baby Blue 2-a pretty sweet little studio Bass amp. 160 watts 2 X 8" drivers 1 X 5" tweeter Versatile too, sounds good with acoustic electric guitar. My Bass player told me his buddy, a Nashville session pro, uses one for his electric violin. I can see why they've become sought after, nice little amp, though not loud enough to gig with a drummer without PA support.

Donald “Duck” Dunn, who played on hundreds of rock and soul classics as the bassist for Booker T. and the MGs, and later as a session player, passed away Sunday morning at the age of 70. Steve Cropper, the MGs guitarist, broke the news on his Facebook page at approximately 12:30AM Eastern time. “Today I lost my best friend, the world has lost the best guy and bass player to ever live,” Cropper, his lifelong friend, wrote. “Duck Dunn died in his sleep Sunday morning May 13 in Tokyo Japan after finishing 2 shows at the Blue Note Night Club.” Born in Memphis in November 24, 1941, Dunn started playing bass at the age of 16. “I tried the guitar but it had two strings too many,” he wrote on his website. “It was just too complicated, man! Plus, I grew up with Steve Cropper. There were so many good guitar players another one wasn’t needed. What was needed was a bass.” Cropper and Dunn soon formed a band, The Royal Spades, which grew into the Mar-Keys. The mother of the band’s saxophone player, Charles “Packy” Axton, was Estelle Axton, who owned the fledgling Satellite Record label. Shortly after their song ‘Last Night’ became a national hit, the label changed its name to Stax.

In 1964, Cropper convinced Dunn to join Booker T. and the MGs after original bassist Lewie Steinberg departed. As the house band for Stax, they provided the music for some of the greatest southern soul music ever recorded. Virtually every song recorded by Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, Albert King, Eddie Floyd, William Bell, Rufus Thomas and many others for Stax bears their distinct groove, with Dunn holding down the low end. After Booker T. and the MGs disbanded in 1971, Dunn became a highly sought-after session bassist for those looking for a bit of that Memphis magic. He appeared on records by Rod Stewart, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Bill Withers, Muddy Waters, Neil Young (on ‘Are You Passionate?,’ which recently turned 10 years old) and many others. A discography, which probably isn’t complete, is on his website. Movie lovers were able to put the face to the sound when he appeared as himself in the 1980 movie ‘The Blues Brothers.’

As a member of Booker T. and the MGs, Dunn was elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992, and received a Lifetime Achievement Grammy award in 2007. Dunn is the second Memphis soul great to pass away this year — Andrew Love, who played tenor saxophone with Dunn on those Stax classics, died on April 12. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and the countless musicians who knew and worked with him over the years.

There has been angst building in some circles regarding the impending predicted Mayan Doomsday of Dec 22 this year. Apparently a recent archeological find of an ancient Mayan calendar in Guatemala reported in todays news moves the Doomsday back some 7000 years-by which time Rolo will be playing 'We've Only Just Begun' by The Carpenters on a Roland Jazz Chorus in a lounge on the outskirts of Tegucigalpa. Now we can go back to worrying about global warming, inequities in the world's financial system, and the release date of the new Klon. Oh, on that last matter, it'll make a nice boost for Rolo's JC 120

The past few years I've played I don't know how many amps and guitars, no matter how expensive, and right now an old Gibson and an old Fender amp make all of 'em sound like cheap plastic gear in comparison.
